The Struggle for Independence

A quiet reflection on the lifelong journey of standing on your own two feet.

We spend so much of our lives trying to stand on our own two feet. As children, we look forward to the day we’re “grown up” enough to make our own choices. As adults, we quietly chase the feeling of living life on our own terms — free from expectations, from obligations, from the weight of other people’s opinions.

But independence isn’t a single milestone you reach and cross off the list. It’s not a moment of arrival. It’s a journey — one that shape shifts with every stage of life. What once felt like freedom might later feel like limitation. What used to seem impossible might one day feel natural.

This craving for autonomy runs deeper than we realise. Entire nations have gone to war for it. They’ve fought and sacrificed for the dignity of self-determination — the same dignity we seek in our daily lives. The parallel is clear: whether it’s a country seeking sovereignty or a person seeking self-direction, independence is something you learn. It’s shaped piece by piece, choice by choice, as you grow into the person you’re becoming.

It can be loud and revolutionary — but it can also be quiet and deliberate. It can come through struggle, but it can also grow through intention, self-awareness, and patience.

Independence to me is learning to stand on your own two feet — not because you have to, but because you can.

What is independence to you?

Always,

Zahra
